Perkins Sabre M135 130hp normally aspirated 6 cylinder marine diesel engine fresh water cooled, single lever control, hydraulic gearbox driving three blade feathering J Prop on stainless steel shaft through an Aquadrive and Halyard, oil filled stern gland. (Full service 2018, annual service and winterisation 2018)
The Aquadrive was a custom fit on this yacht, it absorbs the thrust from the propeller taking the load off the engine mounts thus reducing vibration and noise from the drive train. This later became a standard fitting on the Hallberg-Rassy 53.
Sleipner Side Power 10hp Bowthruster operated though foot switches at the helm.
The M135 was also a custom fit for VULCAN SPIRIT. It gives good torque at low revs so greater control in close quarter manoeuvring under power. The lack of turbo on this engine combined with the three blade propeller make it a superior installation for efficient passage making when motor sailing or under engine alone.

VULCAN SPIRIT is constructed using the hand lay-up method with woven rovings and chopped strand mat in isophtalic polyester resin on isophtalic gelcoat. The topsides are reinforced and insulated with a Divinycell PVC Foam core and a solid moulded rubbing strake capped with a bronze profile. The hull is solid laminate below the waterline with a “top hat” section, moulded, GRP matrix, forming the keel floors, engine beds and sole board bearers. The lead keel is bolted to a GRP keel stub distributing keel loads more evenly through the hull structure.
GRP moulded rudder on 80mm Stainless steel rudder stock on heavy cast bronze fittings, Delrin Roller bearings for extra light steering with a greased rudder gland. The hull moulding is white with a broad blue style line above the rubbing strake and matching boot top. Below the waterline the hull is protected with two coats of epoxy primer from new.
The deck is moulded in an ivory white colour reinforced with a Divinycell PVC foam core on the horizontal surfaces and laid with solid teak in silicone rubber. The front of the cockpit is protected by a classic Hallberg-Rassy “Hard top” and there is a blue style line around the cockpit coamings.
VULCAN SPIRIT was supplied to her first owner through these offices in 1995. The yacht that is now for sale is the result of considerable thought to specification well before the keel was laid. Her current condition, from mechanical reliability to cosmetic appearance is testament to the care, attention and money that has been lavished on this yacht throughout her two ownerships.
The Hallberg-Rassy 53 is a solid, proven cruising yacht with a little sailing flair added by Germán Frers’ hull design. The first owner of VULCAN SPIRIT was able to persuade Hallberg-Rassy to incorporate some of his ideas in the build. The success of some of these ideas convinced the yard to adopt them as standard features on later models.
A quick glance in the bilge or engine room gives you a taste of the manner to which this yacht has been cared for. The value of this yacht is in its condition and in the detail of the specification.
VULCAN SPIRIT would be well suited to anyone looking for a substantial ocean cruiser, there is little to be added that would improve on her current inventory and there is no maintenance to be carried out to make her more ready. VULCAN SPIRIT will be sold with a comprehensive handover and the challenge to keep her in the condition to which she has grown accustomed.
